Yes you can but we would recommend using a dedicated Photo scanner such as the Canon RS40.

Does this stitch 2 x A4 pages together to scan an A3 image?

It is possible to stitch any digital scans together but in this instance you will need additional software such as CS Photoshop.

does this scanner have to be connected to a PC while in use? or can it work 'free-standing'. Also, what is the power source?

This scanner does have to be connected to a PC. Connection is USB 2.0 - Type C
